Prithwis Mukerjee

Prithwis Mukerjee has spent much of his life exploring the intersection of technology, business and imagination. He currently serves as Director of Praxis Business School. He holds a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and an MS and PhD from the University of Texas at Dallas. His career has taken him from Tata Steel to PwC, IBM and IIT Kharagpur, where he was a tenured professor.
Along the way, he introduced relational database technology at Tata Steel, created the eBusiness practice at PwC, and discovered Bitcoin while exploring the metaverse and Second Life at IBM. His continuing fascination with artificial intelligence led, in 2024, to the grant of a patent for a Mechanism to motivate machines to acquire new and useful skills without human intervention.
He has written textbooks on Python and Deep Learning, but beyond the classroom and the workplace, he turns to fiction and speculation. He is the author of the science-fiction trilogy Chronotantra · Chronoyantra · Chronomantra, a collection of Bengali cyber-crime detective stories, and ChronoSutra, an exploration of the ideas that lie beneath the fictional Chronos universe.
Across these rather different pursuits runs a common curiosity: what might lie beyond the limits of what we currently know, build or imagine?
His personal motto is Resources are Limited, Creativity is Unlimited. Rather than simply walking forward from where we are, he prefers to imagine what could be possible — and then walk backwards to discover how we might get there.
